About
I'm Eric Ritter. Guten Tag.
Fractional CMO, SEO consultant, and the person law firms call when they're tired of marketing they can't measure. Seventeen years in this work, on every side of the table it has: agency owner, in-house head of marketing, professor, and podcast host. Here's the story, and why there's a wine glass in it.
01Experience
Seventeen years, every seat at the table.
I've spent my career collecting perspectives most marketers only get one of.
Agency-side, I founded and still run Digital Neighbor, a Tampa marketing agency serving law firms nationwide, recognized as Tampa Bay Chamber's Small Business of the Year. Running an agency for years means I know exactly how agencies price, report, and cut corners, which makes me a very inconvenient advisor for bad vendors.
In-house, I served as head of marketing at law firms. I've defended budgets to skeptical partners, inherited damaged campaigns, fixed leaking intake processes, and learned the lesson that shapes everything I do now: attorneys don't distrust marketing, they distrust marketing that can't connect a dollar to a signed case.
In the classroom, I teach digital marketing as an adjunct professor at USF's Zimmerman School of Advertising and Mass Communications. Teaching forces clarity. If I can't explain a strategy to a room of students, it's not a strategy, it's jargon.
Behind the mic, I host The Search Bar, a podcast on legal marketing growth, in conversation with the firms and marketers doing it well.
02The name
Why the sommelier.
The SEO Sommelier® started as a networking line and became the truest description of the job.
A great sommelier doesn't hand you the longest wine list in the building and wish you luck. He asks what you're eating, what you love, what you've tried before, and then pours the one thing that's exactly right. He also tells you what not to order, which is half the value.
Marketing is a four-hundred-bottle list: channels, tools, tactics, vendors, all of it pitched to you constantly, most of it wrong for your situation. My job is the sommelier's job. Cut through the menu. Pour the right thing. Tell you what to skip. And never, ever recommend the expensive bottle just because it's expensive.
The wine is optional. The judgment isn't.
03Principles
What I believe about this work.
Revenue is the only rating that counts. Impressions, rankings, and traffic are ingredients, not the meal. Every plan I build is measured in signed clients and dollars.
Alignment beats spending. Most firms don't have a spending problem; they have marketing that isn't tied to outcomes. Fixing the tie costs less than raising the budget.
Sequence matters more than effort. The same investments in the wrong order produce nothing. Diagnosis before tactics, foundation before amplification, always.
You should own your marketing. Plans you own, vendors you can evaluate, measurement you can read. I build independence, not dependency, and I consider working myself out of a job a successful engagement.
Kindness and directness aren't opposites. I'll tell you the truth about your marketing, your vendor, or your idea, warmly and without a lecture. Keep it kind, keep it sharp.
04Personal
Off the clock.
Tampa is home. When I'm not in a working session or a classroom, I'm training for a race, hunting down a bottle worth writing home about, or recording The Search Bar. I run my life the way I advise clients to run marketing: pick few things, do them consistently, measure honestly.
That's the story. Let's talk about yours.
One thirty-minute call, no pitch. Tell me where your business is and where you want it to go, and I'll tell you honestly whether I can help.
